RHAPSODY
IN MOTION explored the Centenary of Federation within Australia.
Federation occurred on the 9th May 1901 when the six Australian
colonies joined together under a federal system of government.
RHAPSODY IN MOTION began as a collaboration
between Koori poet Lisa Bellear, visual artists Sue Callanan and
Heidi Knoepfli and composers Eve Duncan, Joseph Giovinazzo and Peter
Myers in April 2000. The artists worked intensively over a twelve-month
period exploring Federation from multiple perspectives. This intensive
process has resulted in an integrated musical, visual and textual
experience, which culminated in two performance on Friday 6th and
Saturday 7th April 2001 at the South Melbourne Town Hall, Melbourne,
Australia. RHAPSODY IN MOTION combined
text, visual art, contemporary classical music and Aboriginal dance
as it contemplated Federation.

RHAPSODY
IN MOTION gives place to many voices and perspectives in the deliberation
of Australias nationhood. It is at times harrowing and emotive,
sacred and celebratory.
